WHAT IS OPEN FLOOR.
A movement mediation.
Open Floor is a type of DANCE where people come together to express themselves through MOVEMENT, CREATIVITY, MUSIC & COMMUNITY... BUT NOT IN A CHOREOGRAPHED WAY!!
At Open Floor we encourage you to listen to your body to find the movement that is right for you in the moment, knowing that it will change and grow. Only you can do you!.
Open Floor works with Core Movement Resources and the 4x4 weave of embodiment to help your fully express, not just your dance but your whole self. Learning resources for on and off the dance floor.
Open Floor Movement Meditation is a call to presence.

"Dancing in Kaia's dance space is the very best medicine anyone could offer me. Medicine for my soul. The opportunity for me to really connect with who I truly am and come home to myself. To simply be my true, authentic self in a space free of judgement"
Lynne Long

KO WAI AU
Ko Kaia Hawkins toku ingoa
Ko Ngāti Pahauwera, Ko Ngāti Kahungunu, Ko Ngā Ruahine oku Iwi.
I whakapapa to the East Coast and the West Coast of Aotearoa, I grew up in Poneke and Porirua. My first love was dance, and then life lead me to become a martial Artist in my formative years. I rediscovered the power of movement and dance in clubs and at festivals in Europe at which time I was a bodyworker/massage therapist.
With my Scottish and English whakapapa I began sitting in circles with the witches they didn't burn,
discovering more about the cycles of my feminine self and our world.
When I returned to Aotearoa I began a journey of healing, it lead me on many paths and adventures including that of decolonizing my mind, and my body. These paths are what I fill up my tool kit/my kete with and the accumulation all of this and more, is how I teach.
I am an ARTist, a Māmā, a magical soundscape creator, a weaver of music and humans, a neurodiverse human being, and a powerful space holder. The space I create on my dance floor brings a grounded spirituality. It is a brave space an indigenized space, a space of empowerment, and radical self-responsibility.
I play phat beats and melodies that call you home to yourself again and again and I fucken love it!
Come join in. It is revolutionary.
